Drawing Environment Concept Art

Jorge Jacinto

This is a piece from my favourite concept artist, his name is Jorge Jacinto. The reason I like this is image is mainly because of the perspective used on the buildings of the image, I think it makes the buildings look huge and like the towering over something. Also the composition he's used to make the buildings the focal point is really clever. He's made the sides of the mountains on the left and right slope downwards leading your eye to the buildings which adds a nice effect. Also adding the person in gives everything a really good sense of scale and also makes the buildings seem that much larger.

Thumbnails

Here is the thumbnails we created for are landscapes, this is a good method because it generates lots of ideas quickly also you could combine ideas.

Refined Sketchs

I felt my first idea lacked something. I was quite good, you could see what the image was trying to show but I really wasn't bonding with it so I decided to do another. I wanted to stick with the original idea so I decided to do a close up of the entrance with a dramatic perspective looking up at the structure. I felt the composition with the second idea was a lot stronger than the first and had a better story to it.

Final

Here is the final image. I decided to go ahead with this idea rather than the first because after half an hour drawing this one I instantly felt that it was a lot better than the first. It had a better composition and more interesting story than the first, visually it looked better. I used a texture for the symbols I found on the internet , I think this adds a really nice effect and makes it looked that much more alien. Also the artist I chose uses textures quite a lot in his work. I also added another tower in the distance to try and show space and distance.
