Object

Feng Zhu
Information about the artist is on task 1.

I chose this image because I really like the style and idea of the machines used in the image. The long and thin legs give a spider or a bug kind of feel while keeping the mech style.

Thumbnail Sketches

Here is some of my thumbnails. I wasnt really sure what I wanted to so I just started jotting down things. Thats why thumbnails are a good way to create ideas quickly.

These are a few sketches I did once I realized what I wanted to create. I wanted to make some kind of bone staff or bone weapon.

I had this idea of doing a kind of ceremonial staff/weapon in a native style. So I did a few sketches and actually started heading towards small weapons, a bit like a tomahawk but keeping to the same original style.

Final

Here is the end result. I wanted to give the look of this being an actual bone off some kind of creature which someone has worked and sculpted into a weapon. Thats why I've given the point a really harsh spike because I wanted it to look like someone has cut it. I tried to adapt the look bones have by giving it lots of curves. I then tried to adapt the tribal look by putting some kind of scroll thing on it then having like teeth and bones hanging off it.

Character Concept Art

This is a piece from a concept artist called 'Daarken'. I've been a huge fan of his pieces since I first saw them when I first started this course. He was the guy that inspired and pushed me to try and do this kind of thing for the future.

The reason I chose this artist is because I think he has a great imagination and ideas. I really love the style he uses in his paintings, like this one, it has a really grungy dirty kind of feel. Also it shows off how old this creature is, he's done a really good job in making it look like its decaying or rotting away. It almost has an Egyptian feel to it by the armour style he has given it. It looks like an ancient Egyptian priest, or a mummified Priest.

Thumbnail Sketches

Here is my thumbnails. This is a good method to use because it generates ideas really quickly.

Refined Sketch

Here is my refined sketch. I spent quite a long time doing the face and the teeth. I wanted to make him look scary and demonic which I think this does pull off, but I actually make a few changes later on which gave me the effect I was looking for. Also I was playing around with the armor design a lot to try and make it similar to his personality and appearance.

Here is a more detailed version of my character. I changed it a little bit since my first idea because I wanted it to be more demon like and more scary. I think this version is a lot better because its more demonic and scary also more intimidating. All I've don to shade is create 3 layers one for base colour, one for mid-tone and one for highlights but only use a hard round brush.

Final

Here is a final image of the character. I made his bottom half into like a fiery tornado that swirls around him. I think this adds a really nice effect and touch to the character. Also I've added some form of vents to the characters rib cage and chest so that you can see the fire inside it and smoke coming out of the character. I think it gives a more hell like appearance.

Colours

Here is a basic colour version of the character. This isn't very detailed because I just wanted to show the colour scheme I was thinking of for the character.
